Scenting your Home
There are so many creative and inexpensive ways to scent your home for the holidays. Some of the most obvious include Room Sprays, Candles, Potpourri or Fixins, Diffusers or Tart Warmers. When I think of Holiday scents my mind drifts off to Spices simmering in a kettle. Here is an easy and fun recipe that you can use to make some yummy Simmerin Fixins.
1 Apple
1 Orange
Cinnamon Sticks
Whole Cloves
Star Anise
Whole Allspice
You can find your spices at most markets if you need them.
Slice your Apple and Orange very thin, place them on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with ground cinnamon
Bake them in the oven on a very low heat, around 225 works well.
Bake them until they are dried out but not burned. It ususally takes about an hour.
Place a few slices of either or both in a small pan of water, add as many spices as you like and turn the heat on the lowest setting. This is something that you need to watch and not forget about. As soon as the mixtures becomes hot it melts together for a mouthwatering Holiday Aroma. You can add a touch of Balsam as well to spruce it up a bit. Please be very careful not to let your pot go dry. This mixture will last for a few days until you will need to freshen it. You can also use this mixture in a potpourri warmer with water added.
Make up some extra and layer it in a jar, tie a piece of homespun around it and give it as a gift.
The nicest thing about this is that it is all natural.
Now on to an easy spicy room freshener recipe.
You need distilled water (about 1 cup)
5 drops of orange essential oil
3 drops of cinnamon essential oil
Mix these in a sprayer bottle for a yummy room freshener.
If you are wanting to calm the kids down before Santa arrives you can mix your distilled water with
4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 4 drops of Chamomile Essential Oil. This is a very calming blend and is very pleasant to fall asleep by.
